Setting Goals and Objectives

Is goal setting Biblical?

Taking life seriously glorifies God. Taking life flippantly glorifies man. Peter Daniels

-God took seven days to create (Genesis 1)
-Nemo built the wall in stages
Paul - Set out towards Spain

	1.	All goals need to be subjected to God's plan. James 4:13
	2.	The Bible indicates that a man can not know his end from his beginning.

A man's steps are directed by the Lord, how can anyone understand his own ways?
					Proverbs 20:24

	3.	Man is not free to live his life carelessly.

Live life, then, with due sense of responsibility--not as men who do not know the meaning and purpose of life but as those who do. Make the best use of your time, despite all the difficulties of these days.
Ephesians 5:15-16 (Phillips)

What is an objective compared to a goal?

	- Objective - something to aim at. It is achievable but not measurable.
eg. - Be a world Christian
eg. - Win souls in India
eg. - Be a potato farmer

-Goal - measurable steps to take towards achieving an objective.
eg. - Read two biographies about world Christians
eg. - Spend four hours a day doing street evangelism in Bombay
eg. - Buy ten sacks of potato seeds

	-Types of goals:
Life goals - What you want to say you did before you die
Long-term goals - What you want to achieve in the next ten years
Intermediate goals - What you want to achieve in the next year to five years
Short-term goals - what you want to achieve in the next 1-3 months

"If you aim at nothing you will hit it every time." unknown

"Goals are a result of bringing dreams and ideas into tangible form." Peter Daniels

Why goals?

	1.	Goals motivate.

"The essences of being motivated is knowing where you are going and knowing you are in the right track with a compelling desire to get there"
Peter Daniels

	2.	Goals keep us from living carelessly.

How to plan goals

	1.	Write a news brief to be read at the time of your death.

	2.	State what your dream would be and what you are prepared to give to see that it is achieved.

	3.	State your life objective or purpose.

	4.	Ask yourself what you need to do now to reach your life objective.
What changes do you have to make?
What disciplines do you need to have?
What do you need to learn?
Does it line up with the biblical pattern for living?

	5.	What do you need to give up to achieve your life objective?

	6.	List you goals:
		-Life goal
		-Long-range goals
		-Intermediate goals
		-Short-term goals

The following quotes are from the book How to Reach Your Life Goal by Peter Daniels

How far an I prepared to go to achieve this goal?
Remove unwanted baggage.
A positive mental attitude and a strong will are partners.
Don't fear exposure to new things - - give experience and instigating force to do our best.
Goals are a result of bringing dreams , ideas, and ideals into tangible form.
Planning takes detail.
If you can not believe your dreams, consider smaller dreams or bigger commitments.
The distance we can travel intellectually is directly related to the size of our dreams and the belief we have in them.
Dreams must honor God, myself, and inspire all who participate.
To procrastinate is to stagnate.
Launching our dreams is the hardest part.
Turn problems into propellers.
You are only a permanent failure when you decide to give up.
Life must be measured in something more meaningful than time.
To accept short -term assignments is to take little nibbles never enjoying the banquet.
Goals must be unselfish. There is no substitute for sharing yourself with others.
